Overview

IOSH Managing Safely is designed to give supervisors, managers and heads of department the knowledge and tools they need to effectively manage their teams' health and safety.

The course includes detailed step-by-step guidance, as well as a real focus on business without jargon or off-putting legal language.

There are clear scenarios to which managers can relate, and high quality technical content that's based on what they will need to know in a real world situation. Importantly, it also brings home just why health and safety is such an essential part of their job.

During the course delegates will learn, amongst other things, how to carry out risk assessments quickly and effectively, how get to grips with auditing and measuring, and discover methods to identify and control hazards.

They'll also gain a detailed knowledge of the law and how the legal system works regarding health and safety, along with steps they can take to protect the environment in their day-to-day work.

On successful completion of the assessment, delegates will be awarded a certificate from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) - an internationally recognized and respected industry body.

What am I going to Learn?

On completion of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Identify their responsibilities for health and safety
  • Explain the reasons for preventing workplace accidents and occupational ill health
  • Define 'hazard', 'risk' and 'risk assessment'
  • Identify common hazards including those associated with entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise, housekeeping and the working environment, slips, trips and falls, working at height, computers and manual handling
  • Carry out a risk assessment
  • Identify the best techniques to control key risks
  • Identify the demands of the law and how the legal system works
  • Describe a health and safety management system
  • Identify why and how accidents should be investigated
  • Outline basic performance indicators for monitoring activities
  • Outline the requirements for the control of waste and pollution.

4: Understanding your responsibilities

  • a. What does the law require you to do?
  • b. How does the law work?
  • c. What are the key parts of a health and safety management system?

5: Understanding hazards

  • a. What are common hazards?
  • b. What can you do about common hazards?

6: Investigating incidents

  • a. Why investigate incidents?
  • b. How do incidents happen?
  • c. How do you carry out an incident investigation?

7: Measuring performance

  • a. What is performance measurement about?
  • b. How do you measure health and safety performance?
  • c. What is auditing?

Assessment

Exam(s) and Assessment

  • An assessment at the end of the course with 30 multi-format questions.
  • Course project which may comprise of a workplace risk assessment, to be completed within two weeks of the end of the course.

Certification

Successful candidates receive an IOSH certificate.
